The Complementary Model of Medicine

At our clinic we offer patients a balanced approach towards healing. Board certified internist Dr. Yi-Po Anthony Wu and his treatment team bring decades of experience in the arts and science of healing. By combining the best of traditional Western and Eastern medicine in treatment and patient care, we are able to provide a level of care unique in the current healthcare environment.

At PCMC, we work to integrate the holistic and naturalistic Eastern healing tradition tapping into the body’s own healing potential with standard practices of Western medical science utilizing standard Western diagnostic and treatment modalities when appropriate and necessary.

How Do Western and Eastern Medicine Complement One Another?
Both Western and Eastern medicine seek to identify factors that cause health problems to arise. While both medical traditions look to understand the mechanisms behind illness so that it can be effectively treated, Western medicine tends to focus on disease and often addresses medical problems only after serious symptoms have developed. Western physicians work on eliminating symptoms using drugs, surgery and technology. Under such premises, we witness the development of many powerful tools for testing and diagnosis including but not limited to blood tests, EKG, X-rays, and MRI; and treatment, including surgical procedures and pharmaceutical drugs.

Physicians practicing in the Eastern tradition aim at identifying conditions, behaviors, and habits that over time will lead to serious illness if left unmodified, or will exacerbate a patient’s condition if illness is already present. The best known Eastern treatment modality in the U.S. is probably acupuncture, with licensure granted since the 1970’s. Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine sterile needles under the skin to balance the excess and deficiency of energy, and to relieve pain which is caused by stagnancy of qi and blood. Using treatment plans that incorporate acupuncture, herbal remedy, exercise, stress reduction, and nutrition, Eastern medicine focuses on optimizing the patient’s well-being.

Eastern and Western medicines are not mutually exclusive. It is our view that they do not compete with each other; rather, it is in the best interest of the patients that they complement each other. For more than two decades, Dr. Yi-Po Anthony Wu’s many loyal patients have witnessed and benefited from the powerful combination of these approaches. When major illness strikes, it is necessary to deploy the full range of modern medical tools and procedures available as well as waking up the healer within to ensure positive treatment outcome. Besides, by seeking to maximize the body’s natural healing power, the complementary approach to medicine offers patients the best prospects for long-term health, whether a patient is in recovery from illness or is looking to prevent illness from occurring.

Health Education at PCMC

At PCMC, we believe that the best strategy for long-lasting health is to adopt a lifestyle that will prevent sickness from occurring in first place. Since 1984, Dr. Wu and his associates have offered free annual Health Seminars to patients and the community to encourage everyone to make smarter and healthier decisions in their daily lives.

PCMC also offers general health maintenance techniques and programs. We provide a slate of friendly and affordable exercise classes taught by our dedicated staff. We currently offer classes in qi-gong, yoga, tai chi, breathing and liu tong exercises, all of which provide excellent health benefits to participants. In addition, our PCMC Herb Center carries many Eastern and Western nutrition and herbal products.

At PCMC we encourage our patients to incorporate healthy diet, exercise and herbal remedy into their healing regimen. We make recommendations to patients on a case by case basis to make sure each individual’s regimen addresses his or her unique condition and circumstances.
